Egypt was defeated by Senegal in their play-off game for a place in the World Cup. The use of lasers by Senegal fans to blind Egyptian players throughout the game, including the shootout, has been a major talking point of the game.
Under intense pressure and distraction from the opposing fans, Egypt missed three of four penalties. The first of those misses came from Mohamed Salah, whose face was illuminated by laser beams as he skied the ball over the ball.
Salah’s vision was distorted, and despite being a top penalty taker, he was unable to hit the target:
Keeper El Shenawy had to deal with lasers throughout the game, including the shootout.
