Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Romelu Lukaku will miss Tuesday’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, but he has been handed a boost because Cesar Azpilicueta tested negative for Covid and will be available.
The Blues face a difficult assignment at the Santiago Bernabeu after losing the first leg 3-1 at home last week, with Karim Benzema scoring a hat-trick on a terrible night for the reigning European champions.
Lukaku played in that game, garnering the anger of Tuchel and Chelsea fans after missing a sitter shortly after his debut in the second half.
His poor luck continued over the weekend when he was ruled out of Chelsea’s match against Southampton due to an Achilles injury, which he still has as the club sets to travel to Madrid.
Despite the fact that Lukaku was ruled out of the Madrid match, there was some good news for Azpilicueta, who also missed the Southampton match after testing positive for Covid before the game.
Thomas Tuchel told the media: ‘The injury situation is that Callum Hudson-Odoi is still out, Ben Chilwell of course still out.
‘Romelu will not travel with us due to his pain in the Achilles. Azpilicueta is in the grou. He has tested several times negative and Ross Barkley is sick, he will not travel. Everybody else is in the squad.’
Chelsea, on the other hand, didn’t need him on the south coast this weekend, romping to a 6-0 victory against St Mary’s, with Mason Mount and Timo Werner each scoring a brace, and Kai Havertz also scoring.
Lukaku has failed to make an impact since joining from Inter Milan for £95 million last summer, making a promising start by scoring on his debut but fading and having physical problems.
He’s only scored five Premier League goals this season, and his last domestic goal came against Brighton in December.
