Meet The 9 Nigerians Players Who Could Join Samuel Chukwueze In UCL Semi-Final

The quarter-final rounds of the UEFA Europa League and Conference League come to a close today, with nine Nigerians/Super Eagles stars in action throughout Europe.

Samuel Chukwueze, a winger for the Super Eagles, came off the bench to save his La Liga team Villarreal CF in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

On the night of their second leg Champions League quarter-final showdown at the majestic Allianz Arena, Chukwueze rocketed into the Bayern Munich net with the helpless Manuel Neuer in goal in no man’s land to give the Yellow Submarine a share of the spoils.

Villarreal stunned the home fans and the world by knocking out one of the tournament’s favorites after a 2-1 aggregate win. That goal came two minutes into extra time after Robert Lewandowski’s goal had tied the Bavarians on aggregate.

Chukwueze became the first Nigerian to score in the Champions League quarter-final stage since 1996, securing Villarreal’s second-ever semi-final appearance.

But which other Nigerians or Super Eagles players will be in a European semi-final this season with the 22-year-old?

Let’s take a look at the nine (9) Nigerians who will be competing in Europe’s second-tier club competitions, the Europa League, and UEFA Conference League with their various teams.

Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun, and Calvin Bassey (Rangers) – UEL

Nigeria’s only representatives in the UEFA Europa League have a lot of work ahead of them. These three players, as well as their Scottish team, Rangers FC, will have to fight even harder to reach the Europa League’s last four.

Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun, and Calvin Bassey will be hoping to assist their club overcome a 1-0 deficit from the first leg against Braga in Portugal last week.

Bassey and Balogun, who were both subbed off after only an hour, started that defeat in Portugal, while Aribo, who scored a beautiful goal over the weekend, came on as a second-half substitute.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman (Leicester City) vs Noni Madueke (PSV Eindhoven) – UECL

Leicester City will rely on its other Super Eagles players, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman, in the absence of Wilfred Ndidi, who is out for the rest of the season, as they try to beat a tenacious PSV Eindhoven, who are expected to field another Nigerian, Noni Madueke.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the King Power, this match is evenly poised and open to who wants it more moving into the second leg in the Netherlands.

Peter Olayinka, Yira Sor (Slavia Prague) vs Cyriel Dessers (Feyenoord) – UECL

Slavia Prague’s Peter Olayinka and Yira Sor will welcome Cyriel Dessers and his Dutch team to the Sinobo Stadium in Praha, Czech Republic, in another all-Nigerian affair.

If the first game between these two clubs is any indication, we can expect a high-octane second leg when they meet again at the Sinobo ground later tonight.

After a six-goal thriller last week, in which all of the Nigerians in action made their presence felt on the pitch for the two clubs, this tie is a winner-take-all affair.

For the third consecutive encounter, Olayinka and Yira Sor scored for Slavia Prague, while Dessers came off the bench to assist Feyenoord’s second goal of the day.

Both clubs will be counting on the in-form trio to keep up their hot streak as they try to secure a place in the final four.

Whatever happens in this game in Praha, one thing is certain: Nigeria will be represented in a European Cup semi-final by another player.
