Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus scored, and Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane also scored, although VAR ruled Raheem Sterling’s effort out.
It was a nail-biter from start to end, with Alisson making a fantastic save against Raheem Sterling only five minutes in before a deflected De Bruyne strike put the league leaders ahead.
Liverpool equalized against the run of play when Jota completed a superb Trent Alexander-Arnold cutback.
Despite the setback, Pep Guardiola’s side kept going and created more chances for Gabriel Jesus, De Bruyne, and Joao Cancelo, before Jesus restored the lead for his team by beating the offside line to complete a second cross at a corner.
Mane was played in and finished impressively after Liverpool had not been at their best in the first half.
While the Reds played better in the second half, Manchester City created more and better opportunities than their opponents, and they believed they had retaken the lead when Sterling tapped past Alisson, only for VAR to show that he had been slightly offside.
Riyad Mahrez came close to scoring a late winner twice in the last minutes of the game, striking the post with a freekick and then lobbing over the crossbar on a last-ditch counterattack.
