Man Utd pivot target signs new Inter Milan deal without talks at Old Trafford

Marcelo Brozovic has officially extended his contract with Inter Milan until June 2026, killing any hopes Manchester United, Liverpool or Tottenham had of signing the player.

The experienced Croatia midfielder would have been out of contract in June and talks had been ongoing regarding his future. Inter were confident they could tie Brozovic down to a new deal, but speculation arose with the player holding fire over putting pen to paper.

Gazzetta Dello Sport also claimed that both PSG and Atletico Madrid were monitoring Brozovic’s situation. While Liverpool, Spurs, and Man Utd were also linked with landing the 29-year-old on a free transfer.

Sport Mediaset (via FC Inter 1908) reported that Liverpool was prepared to make an offer for Brozovic if he failed to re-sign for Inter.

Meanwhile, in October Gazzetta Dello Sport said the Red Devils were “seriously thinking” about Brozovic.

However, the Croatian has now signed a new deal that will keep him at the San Siro for another five years.

The Serie A club’s statement was short and sweet, it read: “Internazionale Milano have announced that they have reached an agreement to extend Marcelo Brozovic’s contract. The 29-year-old midfielder will be an Inter player until 30 June 2026.”

Brozovic said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new deal with Inter. I was desperate to renew my contract and the club was aware of that.

“I’ve never held talks with any other clubs out of respect for Inter and their fans. I’d like to thank the club and I’ll say it again, I’m so happy for today.

“I’ve always said to my agents that I wouldn’t want to speak to any other club unless Inter told me that they weren’t interested in renewing my deal.”

Brozovic gets his own way

Brozovic will reportedly earn €6.5m per season plus €1m in bonuses – a €3m rise on his existing €3.5m-a-year deal.

The club, as outlined by Tuttomercatoweb, reluctantly raised their offer to €5m per season. But with Brozovic demanding €6m it seems the player has got his own way.

A calf problem has sidelined the player for the last two matches against Torino and Fiorentina.

He is set to train on his own this week, with several players away on international duty. Brozovic is set to return to full training next week. And he will be aiming to get back into action against Juventus.

The classy defensive pivot has been at Inter since January 2015 after signing from Dinamo Zagreb for €8m.

Having claimed title glory last season, the Zagreb-born player has made 37 appearances in all competitions this term.

Brozovic has scored one goal and added two assists this season.
