Jules Kounde will be joining Barcelona from Sevilla, beating out Chelsea for the player’s services, according to Spanish news agency SPORT. Both the Blaugrana and the Blues were interested in signing the French center-back during the transfer window. Barcelona’s €60 million offer was approved by Sevilla, so it appears that they have won the race to recruit him.
Kounde will sign a four-year contract with the La Liga team as part of Blaugrana’s offer, which includes a €50 million transfer price and an additional €10 million in add-ons.
Andreas Christensen has been Barcelona’s lone notable defensive acquisition so far, despite the fact that they have been actively looking to strengthen their backline.
Kounde will now become the new center-back for the Blaugrana team. According to Sport, Blaugrana manager Xavi spoke with the player and persuaded him to reject Chelsea, thus it appears that he had a significant influence.
While Blues manager Thomas Tuchel wanted to make a bid once they returned from their pre-season tour of the United States, the Blaugrana are now eager to complete the transfer this week to fend off any additional Chelsea interest.
Kounde did not travel to Lisbon with the Sevilla team, where Sporting CP will be the Andalusians’ opponent in their second preseason match of the summer. The Frenchman made a quick ascend to prominence with Sevilla after joining on a €25 million transfer from Bordeaux in 2019. He did this with strong defensive performances.
During his debut season in Seville, he contributed significantly to the club’s UEFA Europa League victory, playing 133 matches across all leagues. As of right now, Kounde is on track to become Blaugrana’s sixth acquisition of the year.
The Blaugrana have impressively rebuilt this summer after a fairly lackluster 2021–22 season that finished without a trophy.
The results can be seen in preseason, as the Blaugrana have scored seven goals and given up none in their first two games in the US. The new additions are adjusting as well, with Raphinha scoring once in each game, in addition to the veteran guard returning to form.
After his move is finalized, Kounde will hope to join the team, giving supporters a preview of what to expect from him in the following campaign. Both on and off the field, everything is going well for Barcelona, so it will be intriguing to watch if their new-look team can revive its heyday.
