5 Top Players Who Are Likely To Finish As The Top Scorer At The 2022 World Cup

The most important tournament in football would be held in the Middle East for the first time this year as hosts the world in November.

Most players would be gunning for the trophy at the showpiece event but some would also have their eyes on the Top Scorer’s award, which gives the winner the chance to write his name into the history book.

Without further ado, below are the five favourites for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Top Scorer’s award:

The 2022 World Cup is likely going to be Lionel Messi’s last World Cup tournament but it also offers the best opportunity for glory as the South American side hasn’t lost a game in three years and is 32 games unbeaten.

Lionel Messi had a less than impressive debut season with Paris Saint-Germain, managing only four goals, however, he provided 13 assists and a record of 17 G/A in 21 starts remains impressive, whilst his recent record for La Albiceleste has been excellent with 10 goals from his last 16 appearances. Also, his recent five-goal haul against Estonia is a sign that he has still got it.

Karim Benzema is one of the favourites to win the Top Scorer’s award at the Mundial come December this year. The Frenchman won the Golden Boot in the Spanish La Liga and the Champions League in the 2021/22 season and if he can sustain his recent form, he could help France retain the World Cup title as well as win the tournament’s Top Scorer’s award.

Benzema has scored nine goals in 16 caps since returning to the international scene after his suspension and alongside Kylian Mbappe, he will form part of a France team who will begin the World Cup among the tournament favourites.

The list would be incomplete with the name of the 37-year-old who continues to age like fine wine. The Portuguese superstar has broken several records since he moved to despite a disappointing campaign overall for the Red Devils.

He finished as the highest goalscorer for Manchester United last season and was only outscored by Son Heung-min and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the English Premier League.

Ronaldo is international football’s greatest ever goalscorer and has remained prolific on the national stage, scoring 13 goals in 14 appearances in 2021.

Kylian Mbappe was at the heart of the French team that won the World Cup in 2018 but he missed out on the Top Scorer’s award to England’s Harry Kane. However, he would be looking to win the trophy as well as the Top Scorer’s award this time around.

Four years on from putting in perhaps one of the most impressive World Cup final performances, Mbappe has evolved into one of world football’s finest, finishing as Ligue 1’s leading scorer in four consecutive campaigns. He also finished the season as the player with the most assists in the league with 17 league assists.

Harry Kane is the favourite to win the Top Scorer’s award in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, retaining the award in the process.

England has been handed a favourable-looking group stage draw with the USA, Iran, and Wales to come in Qatar and Gareth Southgate’s side will fancy their chances of a successful tournament after reaching the final of Euro 2020 last summer while Harry Kane would be salivating at the prospect of scoring multiple goals against those teams.

Who do you think would win the Top Scorer’s award in the 2022 FIFA World Cup?
