Several clubs have suffered the humiliation of being relegated after winning the league title the previous season, whether due to scandals or simply poor performances.
Many have returned to the top division the following season, but missing out on a complete season of top-flight football can have serious ramifications, especially if high-quality players are lost.

Liverpool was relegated in the 1953/1954 season, they did not regain their place in the First Division until the 1962/1963 season under the management of Bill Shankly.
Liverpool first participated in European competition during the 1964/1965 season, a season which represented Liverpool’s first FA Cup triumph.
